While many airports around the world offer travelers visiting their terminals large windows with great views of the tarmac and runways, and a few have open viewing decks and terraces, one airport, Munich, has an entire park to welcome aviation fans.

Munich Airport Besucherpark, or Visitors Park, is open to the public and has no security checkpoints.  Everyone is welcome.  It provides excellent parking as well as its own stop on the S1 and S8 commuter rail lines.

The Besucherpark is comprised of several sections, including historic aircraft, an ADAC rescue helicopter, museum-quality exhibits, a cinema, and a viewing platform.

Separate from the Besucherpark, Munich Airport also has a Visitors Terrace in Terminal 2 for those already at the airport.

VIEWING HILL

One of the best features of the Besucherpark is the Viewing Hill, a mere 172 steps (and €1) later, the visitor is atop the hill, 92 feet or 28 meters above the airport.

From this vantage point the views of Terminal 1, the apron, the ramp, and takeoffs and landings on both runways are a panoramic treat, although a bit limited on overcast days.

Simply insert a €1 coin in the turnstile and begin your climb.  The hill is open 24 hours a day.
