UPDATED: Small Plane Crashes in Laytonsville, One Dead

One person has died, after a plane crashed near Gaithersburg.

Update—9:54 a.m., Tuesday, July 17

A spokesperson from Davis Airport identified the man who died in Monday evening's plane crash in Laytonsville as 79-year-old flight instructor Frank Schmidt, according to a report by FOX 5.

Schmidt was an expert instructor with more than 40 years experience, according to the report. Friends told FOX 5 Schmidt had been hired by the pilot of the plane to take him on a series of practice runs.

A small plane crashed around 7 p.m. Monday in Laytonsville, according to Asst. Fire Chief Scott Graham with Mongomery County Fire and Rescue.

The plane crashed near the Davis Airport in the 23600 block of Pocahontas Drive,  Graham said. The airport is just north of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg.

Graham said one person has died, while another remains in critical condition and was airlifted to a local trauma center. The Federal Aviation Administration is on its way to the scene.

Witnesses said the plane rolled over and went down just after take off. A mechanic said the flight was a lesson flight, NBC Washington reported.
