CLEVELAND — A northeast Ohio doctor has been arrested after a loaded gun was discovered in his carry on luggage at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Cleveland police charged Dr. Richard Buxman, 60, of Poland, Ohio with carrying a concealed weapon.

According to police reports, Buxman and his wife were going through a security checkpoint on Monday when a TSA officer believed he saw the outline of a gun in the x-ray of a computer bag.

A Cleveland police officer reported he was called over and when he examined the bag he found a loaded 9mm handgun next to an Apple iPod in a zippered compartment.

The police report also said the officer found two more clips for the gun, a folding knife and a loose bullet in the case.

Police said the doctor’s wife “stated in a distressed state that she had packed the computer case and that they both forgot that the weapons were inside.”

Dr. Buxman “aknowledged ownership of the bag,” according to police, and was placed under arrest.

According to a spokeswoman for the state medical board, Buxman is an osteopathic doctor who has worked in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.

His record showed no disciplinary action whatsoever from the medical board.

Travelers on Tuesday were shocked that anyone would have made such a disasterous mistake, but were happy that the gun and knife did not get past security.

“It makes me less irritated with having to go through all of the mess to get to the airplane. It’s good they can find things like that before something disasterous happens,” said Bobi Surmick of Chardon.

“It proves that the airport security, and all the crazy things that are happening, it proves that it works.  It’s there for a reason,” said Ashley Bryant of Shaker Heights.
