Passengers are forced to bunk up at Boston's Logan Airport after dozens of flights are canceled as snow storm sweeps across New England bringing up to eight inches of snow

  • Snow brought travel chaos to Boston as 36 flights were canceled at Logan
  • Passengers were held on planes for six hours while others slept on the floor
  • Schools delayed opening today and fire departments warned of icy roads

Passengers have been forced to sleep on camp beds at Logan Airport after dozens of flights were canceled as up to eight inches of snow were dumped on the east coast.

Passengers, some who had been stuck at the airport for over 12 hours, said all hotels were booked and flight crews put out cots on the airport floor, while on the other side of the country California was hit by a huge 'bowling ball' storm.

The snow has seen 36 flights out of Boston canceled already, with some travelers stuck on their planes for up to six hours before they were shuttled away amid staffing issues in the bitter cold.

A huge backlog in deicing the fueling the planes saw the passengers unable to disembark the plane, and Delta offered them a $50 travel voucher as compensation.

Schools across several districts in Massachusetts also delayed opening today following the first snowfall of the season.

Newton Fire Department said the slippery roads saw multiple accidents occur on Route 9 west including a seven-car pile-up.

The snow blanketed large swaths of Northeastern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, northwest Connecticut, northwest New Jersey, New England, and western Massachusetts which are all under Winter Weather Advisories.

In Chester, Massachusetts, eight inches of snow had fallen by 9.30pm last night.

The Winter Weather Advisory in the state was only in place until 7am today but icy commutes are still likely in the east and in the south of Rhode Island.

On Monday, residents and commuters can expect one to three inches of snow in New York, northern New Jersey, New England, and northern Pennsylvania.

Snow in Monsey, New York was seen for the first time this winter as some areas in the state are expected to see up to three inches.

Footage of the snowfall captured cars, house roofs and grass covered with a light layer of snow.

Meanwhile, as those on the northwest wait for the snow to arrive, the other side of the US has been hit by heavy rain and several feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada.

The storm shut down mountain highways, toppled trees and triggered flood and avalanche warnings on Saturday from the coast of Northern California to Lake Tahoe.

More than 250 miles of the Sierra remained under a winter storm warning until early Monday from north of Reno to south of Yosemite National Park.
