Passengers on a flight from New York to Manchester Airport travelled over 1,400 miles before a technical fault sent them back to the Big Apple - with a total delay of 25 hours.

Travellers on board the Virgin Atlantic 747-400 made it close to Gander in northeast Canada - around two hours into the journey - before a 'cargo fire alert' prompted the pilot to return to New York.

The pilot turned flight VS-128 back to New York, where passengers were delayed for a further 25 hours.

On investigation, engineers found there was no fire on board. Instead, a 'small error message' had displayed incorrectly. This was fixed when the aircraft was back at JFK airport.

A Virgin Atlantic spokeswoman confirmed the incident, which took place on Saturday.

She added: "Our VS128 flight from New York to Manchester returned to JFK as a precautionary measure, due to a minor technical issue.

"The safety or our customers and crew is always our top priority and after a normal landing, customers were provided with overnight accommodation."

She added: "The flight departed New York 24 hours later and all customers have now completed their journey.

"We'd like to apologise for the disruption to their journey and thank all our customers for their patience."
