Very nice photo!
One of these planes made news headlines in 1981 in South Africa when an African Mozambique fighter pilot flew this Soviet-built MiG-17 jet to South Africa and asked for olitical asylum.
The pilot, Lt. Bomba, was escorted by South African Mirage jets to land at the Hoedspruit Air Force Base, about 200km from Mozambique
Lt. Bomba told journalists in a brief statement he had defected because he was "disgusted with the Marxist government policy in Mozambique. After six years of independence there has been no progress in Mozambique. " 'That is why I made up my mind to defect to SA where I have been treated very well ' he said.
Upon inspection it was determined that the plane was not in very good condition, one of its cannons could not fire and the tires were 'dangerously smooth.' An interesting observation was to discover that these planes did not provide a pilot ejector seat.

Just curious, Is this re-engined?
shrudini
Where is the nose?
Ken Hardy
Not sure how airworthy they were but they looked cool, they had a Rolls cloned engine
DracoLlasa
@shrudini the nose is the intake for the jet engine, so no "point"

So this really is a crotch rocket!

No ejector seat! A Soviet Kamikaze.

Ejection seats. Back in the 1960’s when the Spanish Air Force was flying F-86’s they were losing an inordinate number of airplanes. The pilots were ejecting frequently. Solution: took away their parachutes and installed seat cushions. Problem solved. Actual report. Other memory: pilots were officers, tower personnel were enlisted. If the pilot received an instruction that did not meet with his personnel needs he just ignored it and did what he wanted to do. We had to go around once because an F-86 cut us off on short final. Interesting days. Chrome Dome.

@Draco Boy. You'd think his legs would get cold! JK

I believe this airplane flew as part of the Vietnam War flypast at OSH 2017. It was a lot of fun to watch it chase and be chased by the A-4. From what I have read it was a dangerous opponent in a 'fur ball'.
