Back in the fabulous era of propbirds, my absolutely ultra #1 most fave aircraft sound was the wonderful whistle of the four Rolls Royce Darts on the Vickers Viscounts. (Old timers know exactly what sound I am referring to; once experienced, always enjoyed; never forgotten. Young un's missed out.) But now that the days of the Darts has passed into history, my new #1 favorite prop sound is the awesome harmony of the Allison turboprops on the E-2 Hawkeyes. I once stood at the side of NFL's runway as four Hawkeyes lined up and positioned to mito-launch. A stunning symphony of sound. The ONLY way that experience could have been any better would have been if I could have been on a carrier to experience it.
