Doc’s Friends, the Wichita-based nonprofit organization that is restoring the B-29 Superfortress Doc to flying condition, says the historic airplane will be ready to fly as soon as the avionics, fuel tanks and a few other last remaining items are finished. The goal is to get the airplane back in the air by the end of the year.
A group of 30 volunteers has finished hanging the flaps on the aircraft, the last major structural piece to be installed as part of the Herculean restoration.
“It has been incredible to witness the dedication of all the volunteers,” said TJ Norman, Doc’s Friends operations manager. “Taking the time out of their own week to work on this aircraft just shows the unified passion we all share to get this warbird back in the air.”
After the successful completion of the airplane’s maiden post-restoration flight, the B-29 will begin traveling around the country as a flying museum.
