Port Authority Mulls Expanding Scope to Entire Airport

The long-overdue makeover of LaGuardia Airport in New York may take a bit more time.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Friday that it is delaying its announcement of a winner in the bidding for the $3.6 billion Central Terminal Building Replacement Project from mid July until September.
Construction on the new terminal was due to start in 2017 and a replacement for the current Central Terminal, also known as Terminal B, was scheduled to open by 2021.
Sources said that the reason for the delay was that the Port Authority wanted to consider expanding the scope of the project. It will reportedly solicit proposals for the refurbishment of other parts of the airport, which has three terminal buildings including the historic Marine Air Terminal, in addition to the Central Terminal.
Earlier this month, the Port Authority announced that the Central Terminal would get a major makeover that will tide it over until 2021. The work, which is expected to be completed by fall, includes a new American Express Centurion Lounge, upgraded air conditioning, escalators, and restrooms, as well as new seating with charging stations in the food courts.
LaGuardia Airport opened 75 years ago and is the busiest airport in the United States without any non-stop service to Europe.
